How I Became a Dentist

Most people get a chuckle out of the story about how I got into dentistry. I thought I’d share it with you. I know you will keep it just between us.

Sometimes you end up doing what you do because you just bet you can do it.

I planned to get a PhD in chemistry, to be a chemist. That’s where I was headed.

Walter Baisley, I’ll call him to protect his innocence, was a year ahead of me at Oklahoma Baptist University. One night he came waltzing into the dorm waving an acceptance paper for dental school.

Pompous beyond words, he said, “Hey, I got into dental school. Five hundred people apply. They just accept 80. I was one of them. Aren’t I neat?”

I said, “Walter, you’re so full of hot air. Anybody can get into dental school.” He said, “I bet you $100 you couldn’t.” I said, “I bet you $100 I can.” That was $100 I didn’t have. Walter made a big deal out of it. A bunch of people were there to watch the scene go down.

I had no choice. I applied to the University of Missouri Dental School in Kansas City. I got accepted without even going back for an interview.

Waving my acceptance letter, I made a big deal out of telling Walter in front of these guys, “I got in. Where’s the $100?” He wrote me a check for $100.

The acceptance letter said they required $100 to hold the seat, so I forked that $100 over to the University of Missouri in Kansas City.

I got in for all the wrong reasons, but after the first year there I felt it was good for me and I just went ahead with it.

After my studies at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, I stayed in Kansas City and practiced restorative dentistry for fifteen years before my family and I moved to Boston so I could study Endodontics.

Again, Thanks!!!

We have performed thousands of root canals during these 20 years. It has been a pleasure to serve the people of Southern Arizona with you. We sincerely thank you and want you to know, more than ever, we are here to exceed your expectations and those of the patients you send our way.

“Take from a man his wealth, and you hinder him; take from him his purpose, and you slow him down. But take from man his hope, and you stop him. He can go on without wealth, and even without purpose, for awhile. But he will not go on without hope.”

Dear Dental Colleagues,

I hope the summer has allowed you to escape and log in some always needed RnR. Life cannot be all work and no play. I know we are all anxiously waiting for a turn-around in the economy so we can all be busier at what we do- teeth! I wish I knew exactly when that is going to be but I would be lying if I told you that I knew.

I’m sure most of you know that about this time of year, I send out my PLEA for volunteers for the annual HOPE FEST event. Yes, it is that time again. PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! Help. The main event will be Saturday, October 22nd. Same as before, HOPE FEST dental hygiene and all screenings are at TEP with off-site operative at my office and extractions at the two oral surgery offices.

The HOPE FEST event has received national attention over the last several years and has caught the attention of numerous other cities who are seeking help in putting together their own “HOPE FEST”.

What this represents is the dedication of our community doing such a fantastic job and being impact providers. The dental component of HOPE FEST has set the standard to what these other organizations are trying to achieve. I thank each and every one of you for all you have done for HOPE FEST TUCSON.

So I am asking you again to help and make this year’s event even greater.

Please call (520) 668-1381 and sign up. You know I never turn anyone away from helping. There are jobs for everyone! And as usual- operative doctor spots are hardest to fill in the afternoon so please consider this time spot if you are flexible. We are going to try and be completely shut down by 5:00pm.

DOCTORS- This next topic gets a bit more complicated. As you may know, for the last three years, one of the greatest services that we have been able to provide for a select group of HOPE FEST patients is the fabrication of removable prosthetics. As fantastic as this service is, it comes with its own challenges. As I mentioned last year, one of our biggest volunteer groups are the people over at JC Rose dental clinic who fabricate the dentures for these HOPE FEST patients.

The campaign to help raise dollars went extremely well but I am faced with a dilemma. JC Rose can only treat so many patients in a given period of time and this leaves me with post extraction HOPE FEST patients waiting for dentures that have no teeth for an unhealthy period of time. What I am asking of you, would you be willing to see one or two of these post extraction patients in your own office and work them up for the denture. I am currently getting labs to process these cases for us and this means no expense to you. This would be such a great service to get these patients in teeth quickly after the HOPE FEST event.

I will still be campaigning for donations for the dentures since we will need to buy the teeth and acrylic so please help in as many ways as your heart guides you.

Thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy letter- I so appreciate all of you who give your time, energy and money to make this such an incredible event. We all know there will never be an end to this type of need. But our part can be that we can make some sort of impact and that is exactly what we do!

I hope to hear from you as soon as possible – again my direct number is 917-2348.

Blessings to all of you,

Dean Hauseman III
