A Slice of Dr. Barney Streit’s
Varied Life
Writing screen plays, programming computers, collecting scarab beetles, world travel and serious photography, plus dentistry, patchworks the picture of this member of the Southern Arizona Endodontics team.
He says with a grin, “I’ve done all kinds of weird stuff in my life.”
Writing punctuated his college days. He tells about two plays he wrote…one called Saucer…the other, Guardian of the Forest.
Then along came computers. Barney remembers himself as one of the early adapters, owning a personal computer when almost no one else did. |

He and some friends formed a club for people who were Apple II enthusiasts. He even co-wrote a program called Invoice Master, which was published in a magazine called Nibble.
Today, pursuing his interest in photography, he and his wife,Sandy, take vacations where they travel with and shoot alongside some of the top professionals in the world like Bill Fortney, Scott Kelby and Matt Kloskowsky.
But, it’s the bug collecting, tracing back to the second grade, that pulls together his many passions. He’s photographed scarab beetles in Ecuador, Costa Rica, Panama, Malaysia, Mexico and all over the United States. Barney even writes an international newsletter called Scarabs devoted to those who study the scarab beetle.
Barney calls himself a “Johnny-come-lately” to the field of endodontics. He practiced general dentistry for more than 15 years before he went back to specialize in endodontics.
He says about the turning point in his life, “I heard a lecture by Cliff Ruddle -- a pretty famous Endodontist. It inspired me. I can’t tell you why I enjoy this profession so much. Perhaps it’s the challenge …working in a tooth canal by feel. You can’t “see” what you’re doing most of the time. .
It’s also being a part of a winning team. These guys are winners.”

Madera Canyon, just south of town, attracts a world-wide audience to observe the rare beetles they find there. That just might be one of the reasons I moved to Tucson! |

“It was a rare pleasure to meet you and benefit from your expertise and graciousness. Thank you for the time spent examining my problem tooth: I shall abide by your unfortunate suggestion. I enjoyed learning about enododontics and finding such a rare person as you in this present business age. Gratefully,” -P. Mason |
